ABSTRACT

There are a lot of crosscurrents of issues that have come together in the 20th century regarding midwifery in Florida… You have to see it in the context of Southern history, rural history, women’s history, matters of race, matters of struggle within the profession for who controls health care, and consumer resurgence… What we have in midwifery today is just the confluence of all of those various forces and it’s moving rapidly and it still has the potential to be very, very different as other forces come to play, like managed care and epidurals.
