ABSTRACT

Conceived as a multifaceted initiative to reassert the economic and educational preeminence of Europe, the Bologna Process evolved during its first decade (1999–2009) into a global influence on higher education. The Process has offered a compelling example both from the apparent success of discrete initiatives and from its example of a commitment to pursue all initiatives simultaneously through a coordinated and closely monitored implementation strategy. Though it is important to acknowledge the formidable challenges that supporters of the Process must address in Europe, we can begin to appreciate why the influence of Bologna beyond the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is likely to continue to grow.
