ABSTRACT

Previous studies have demonstrated that a small group of online video game players has trouble controlling their gaming behavior (Chiu, Lee, and Huang, 2004; Gentile, 2009; Grüsser, Thalemann, and Griffiths, 2007; van Rooij, Schoenmakers, Vermulst, van den Eijnden, and van de Mheen, 2011). While these people show a loss of control over gaming that can result in considerable harm, there is an ongoing debate on the classification of this behavior as a new addiction; that is, “video game addiction” (VGA) (American Psychiatric Association, 2010; Wood, 2008).
