ABSTRACT

Computer games studies is a broad field with a great number of contributing disciplines. As a result, a great variety of research approaches and methods are being used. While questionnaires clearly dominate the field (e.g. Axelsson and Regan, 2006; Quandt, Wimmer, and Wolling, 2008), other methods applied include laboratory experiments (e.g. Yee, 2007), ethnography (e.g. Taylor, 2006), and qualitative approaches (see Vermeulen and Van Looy, Part II; Kowert and Oldmeadow, Part III). The choice of a suitable method naturally depends on the discipline as well as the research question, and every method is impaired by drawbacks and caveats.
