ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by discussing aspects of the current architectural computer-aided design (CAD) paradigm, and then reviews how and why computer programs created for other design disciplines are being used in exploratory architecture. The lessons distilled from these first two discussions will then be used to suggest how we might create a new type of architectural software better matched to the exploratory design process. Finally, the results from validation projects conducted with a new prototype CAD system specifically intended to better encourage creative architectural exploration are presented.
