ABSTRACT
Most Americans have assumed, since the founding of the first colonial institutions of learning, that all United States (US) schools should train young people in the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. The basic principles of republican citizenship in the USA were developed during two distinct historical periods: the classical era of the Greek city states and the Roman Republic, and the revolutionary era of Western Europe and America, which saw the growth of the modern nation states.
