The origins, arrival and spread of residential Minnesota Model centres across the UK

Late in 1974 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, a new ‘treatment centre’ for alcoholics opened in a building previously known as Totterdown Hall. This name presumably being considered unsuitable, it was renamed Broadway Lodge. This was the first of the Minnesota Model centres in Britain, inspired by the American clinics such as Hazelden which had been established in the 1950s.
