ABSTRACT
In contrast with this, the following major characteristics of Euro-American adoption were noted:
• its relatively rare occurrence • a low estimation of adoption (a child was likely to be adopted from
a life on the ‘edge’ of society)
• asymmetric relations between the adopting and the adopted • the separation of adopted children from their birth family, disrupting
the biography of adopted children.
