ABSTRACT

In 1991, in response to my suggestion that she tell me her life history, Jeanette, a Jamaican in her thirties, taped for me the recollections of childhood relocation and adoption reproduced in this chapter. The central theme of Jeanette’s narrative is her loss, search for and providential discovery of a mother and a family. Around this is woven a moral story of cruelty and kindness, ill fortune, good luck and personal strategy.
