The “American” is no longer (as if it ever was) an uncontested vision. Instead,
the very meaning of American identity, and especially the meaning of
whiteness and masculinity, have been thrown seriously into question by the
politics of diversity and tolerance. Hate groups have mobilized in an effort to
reassert a narrow, exclusive understanding of the national identity.
