ABSTRACT
This character appeared as a ‘subplot’ of a cartoon in The Times Educational Supplement in 1992. It is, as far as I know, the first and probably only appearance of ‘Appraisal Man’ but the image and its metaphorical implications linger on in the hearts and minds of teachers currently wrestling, as they would see it, with compound innovations in their practice and demands upon their time and resources.
