ABSTRACT

David Rokeby is an artist whose work is largely in the form of installations thatuse a software system that he has devised. Since the mid-1980s he has been oneof the leading international practitioners in new media, exploring the possibilities of computer systems as well as finding new ways to create interactive artworks. One of the most important things about his works is that they demonstrate that interactivity can create highly complex environments because it brings together the intelligence of the machine with the knowledge, assumptions and perceptions of its audience. As a result, his system actively demonstrates how the users are key participants in the work and shape its possibilities at a range of levels.
