ABSTRACT
I should start by stating that this account of public archaeology in America is not in any way intended to be complete or comprehensive. Such a discussion would easily cover several volumes. Rather, this account attempts to outline the major episodes in the development of public archaeology in the United States based on my personal experiences and perceptions. Most of my professional career has been spent in one aspect or another of cultural resources management, in particular archaeological resources management, in three federal agencies.
