ABSTRACT

The courtyard house was the most widespread house form in traditional Arab and Islamic cities. While modern house building in the region has moved away from this form, the courtyard house continues to be the focus of numerous studies, ranging from those that deal with external environmental issues to those that address the suitability of courtyard housing to meet the social agendas of prevailing governments (Azzawi 1969; Noor 1986; Warren and Fethi 1982).
