The role of privacy in the design of the Saudi Arabian courtyard house

This chapter explores the evolution of the traditional courtyard house in Saudi Arabia. The main focus is upon behavioural and cultural factors, especially the importance of privacy and how its imperatives have found expression in building layout. The question of privacy is related to Islamic teachings, and through an examination of religious texts an argument is constructed for the conceptualization and physical form of the courtyard house.
