ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses design based on the ne–tuning of the laws and constants of physics for intelligent life. Some physicists and others have taken the position that ne–tuning provides significant evidence that the cosmos is designed and, furthermore, that one of the purposes of the designer was to create embodied, intelligent beings. One of the most impressive and most discussed cases of ne-tuning is that of the cosmological constant, a term in Albert Einstein's equation of general relativity that governs the rate at which space expands. The design argument 143 probability of a proposition should be understood as the rational degree of belief analytic philosophers should have in the proposition. The existence of ne–tuned laws provides significant evidence for theism over the non–design hypothesis. The chapter concludes with a brief comment on the nature of the design argument from physics and cosmology.
