ABSTRACT

This chapter has two main aims. First, for analytical purposes, it divides the Armenian genocide into three levels (macro, meso, and micro) that are fleshed out and discussed, applying theoretical insights on comparative genocide. This overview incorporates recently published and forthcoming studies on the destruction of the Ottoman Armenians. Second, the chapter suggests new research directions, with a particular focus on existing problems in comparative genocide research. This part consists of two thematic sections, on regional differentiation and low-ranking perpetrators. This outline attempts to survey what is known, what remains unknown, and what is desirable in these areas of research.
