ABSTRACT

For more than a decade, literate Americans who want to know have been able to ascertain the ingredients in the processed foods they intend to purchase. Listed in order of abundance are the chemical additives, sugars, salts, oils, and colorings used to make the product marketable. 1 We have come to feel we're entitled to know what we're putting inside our bodies. Of course the words “spices” and “flavorings” could mean anything, but this isn't a major cause for hesitation. No matter how mystifying the information on the packaging may actually be, its presence at least conveys somewhat of a message of confidence between manufacturer and buyer.
