ABSTRACT

Regional economic models provide important information for support of regional policy-making, but none provide the full spectrum of decision needs. Shift-share (S-S) analysis and input-output (I-O) models are two of the most widely applied and helpful techniques for examining regional economic structure. Recently, data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been applied to investigations of relative efficiencies of regional economies and sectors (Ali and Lerme, 1990; Dinc and Haynes, 1999). These models are usually developed and used in isolation – hence, they miss some important information. Taken together, these three methods provide complementary information and an overall perspective useful to policy-makers.
