ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the supervision of design research projects, with acknowledgment of the variety of roles. In some countries, such as the US and UK, students sign up for a PhD or EdD program, often paying for it themselves or possibly through a bursary, or scholarships. They often take part in a larger research program led by a professor, and find their own niche in a long-term research agenda or program. Design research in education requires a double expertise: design and research. A design research project can become huge. Because of design researchers' preference for authentic settings, holistic views, and studying larger ecologies, the number of relevant issues can be overwhelming. In the doctoral program of learning technology design research, students already do micro-cycles of design research at an early stage, which then becomes pilot work for their dissertation.
