ABSTRACT

There is a wide range of practice in Europe and elsewhere in the grouping of children for classroom teaching. Some schools stream according to ability, others put in the same class a very wide range of pupils, from different social, religious and ethnic backgrounds as well as varying intellectual ability and academic attachment. In training teachers for our rapidly changing society we need to look forward to the 21st century and consider such aspects as increased leisure, the demands for skill and the likelihood that people will work in teams. All these mean that both the process and content of education are important.
