ABSTRACT

This chapter engages with the contemporary trend to create a heritage label to attract tourists in relation to the crab fishing activity of Northeast Brazil. As part of local heritage the identity of the occupational group – crab fishermen in North-eastern Brazil – is used to promote culinary tourism. The research is based on ethnographic fieldwork undertaken over 13 months from 2011 to 2014. The uça (Ucides cordatus cordatus) crab fishing in the Parnaíba River Delta perfectly illustrates the overlap between the different dimensions of heritagisation in touristic markets. Finally, the chapter describes how in Northeast Brazil the role of the crab fisherman has changed as a result of the expansion of tourism.
