ABSTRACT

Use technology and media to enable the integration of science into children's everyday lives and across contexts. In this chapter, the authors describe how each guiding principle is informing our current line of research. At its core, the CPB-PBS Ready to Learn Initiative is focused on equity: supporting the millions of children who otherwise would lack access to early learning experiences that prepare them for school and beyond. The authors describe what we are learning about how to help them fulfill the roles they play. Many parents lack confidence when it comes to helping their children learn science. The authors describe what they have learned so far about designing for feasible implementation in community programs and homes. Many community-serving organizations have long histories of success offering fun, active, social learning experiences for children and families. Engaging young children with science is a critical part of preparing them for the academic expectations of elementary school.
