ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss two strategies for using media to advance children's learning: curation of content and mediation. It is important to note that curation often extends beyond the selection process the authors have described. While joint engagement with media (JEM) can expand the people understanding of how media can be used for learning, it also has the potential to exacerbate gaps of educational opportunity. At the start of the study, researchers oriented families to study materials and the learning objectives. Maximizing the educational potential of media resources calls for two critical components: curation and mediation or JEM. The findings the authors present in this chapter call attention to the importance of supporting such teachers and parents in the process of facilitating children's learning with media, and that in doing so it is ultimately beneficial for children's learning.
