ABSTRACT

Today is a period of great innovation in postsecondary education. Facilitated by the maturation of new educational technologies and spurred by growing demands for reform in higher education, institutional leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and activists are all proposing and implementing new approaches with the goal of increasing educational attainment. Online education, now more than two decades old, has expanded to serve millions of students, and other approaches such as MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), certificate programs such as “Computer Boot Camps,” and curricula that measure learning by achievement of “competencies,” are emerging.
