ABSTRACT

The author argues that contemporary Indian political theory is largely derivative, diffident, rather timid, and understands uniquely Indian political experiences on largely Western terms. In comparison with his previous chapter in the volume, the author has defined the other factors affecting Indian political thought. First, India has a long tradition of political thought but not political theory. The second factor stressed in this chapter has to do with the academization of political theory. After independence and particularly during the last few decades, political theory has become professionalized.
