ABSTRACT

My chapter describes the approaches I have used to transform my face-to-face Beatles course to an online format. The course is an in-depth, album-by-album look at the music, lives, and times of the Beatles. My primary focus is the music the band created. I aim to heighten student listening skills and foster in them a deeper appreciation of the Beatles’ musical artistry. My experience as a recording engineer and producer allows me to include a hands-on demonstration of multi-track recording in my class. While at first I wasn’t keen on teaching online, I’ve since found that the material used in my traditional course can be creatively adapted for use in its online equivalent. My general method is to record class-capture videos every week during my on-campus class, which contain content and discussions about specific topics, and share them with my online students. I recognise that students have different learning styles. Indeed, using an online approach can sometimes enhance content covered more traditionally and assist students with learning disabilities.
