ABSTRACT

The pursuit of best practices in digital media can be related to three major emphases in ethical thought: duty, virtue, and care. All of these have histories stretching back to ancient times, but they remain relevant to 21st-century journalism. These concepts provide three ways to frame discussion of best practices that connect with what scholars who study media ethics have been saying before and after the development of digital media. The concepts also connect with the reality of how journalists and news organizations have discussed and pursued excellence. This chapter will examine all three concepts by providing an overview connected to scholarly discussion and professional application.
