ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights the myriad factors that can impact the children of incarcerated parents. It describes the experiences of infants living with their incarcerated mothers in a relationship-focused residential parenting program in a women's correctional facility. The book examines the impacts of parental incarceration on children. It explores relations between race and ethnicity and the life histories of incarcerated mothers and fathers. The book discusses alternative sentencing alternatives for parents with minor children that are currently used throughout a state and then present preliminary outcome findings. It also examines the moderation of outcomes in a randomized controlled trial of a prison-based parent management training program. The book provides an overview of the plethora of programs that have been proposed for the children of incarcerated parents.
