ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to remind readers of the essential tenets of physical literacy and to present significant developments since the publication of Physical Literacy throughout the Lifecourse (Whitehead, 2010). Areas of discussion cover the definition of the attributes, and the legitimacy of aligning ‘literacy’ with ‘physical’. With respect to ‘literacy’, readers are reminded of the relationship of this notion to the ‘interaction’ between the individual and the world, which is highlighted as significant in existential philosophy. Physical literacy is then compared with other areas of study that have adopted this suffix. Mention is also made to the writings of UNESCO on this topic.
