ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the material of the whole book. As indicated in Chapter 1, the overarching intention of this book was to build from the introductory text Physical Literacy throughout the Lifecourse (Whitehead, 2010) to substantiate a case for the importance and value of fostering physical literacy. This intention issued in the consideration of three areas. First, there was a need to clarify certain aspects of physical literacy that were undermining the acceptance of the concept. Second, it was seen as significant and pertinent to share with readers how physical literacy was being adopted and developed across the world. Finally, it was judged legitimate to reflect on the positive messages conveyed in these narratives, and to propose that the concept has significant potential to contribute to the quality of life for all. This proposal of value was backed up by reference to life history research and the congruence of physical literacy with many aspects of human flourishing. The chapter closes with some recommendations for the next steps in the development and establishment of physical literacy.
