ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the value of physical literacy, and covers, first, reference to the philosophical underpinning of the concept, this being the philosophical perspectives on monism, existentialism and phenomenology. Second, the chapter sets out a justification for attention to be paid to the concept arising from the perspective of social justice. The issue of physical literacy being an end in itself, rather than a means to other ends, is addressed. This includes the way that authentically presented experiences in physical activity can, in and of themselves, affect the wider development and life of individuals. Finally, a brief reference to the specific value of physical literacy at different broad ‘phases’ in life is outlined.
