ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out the development of physical literacy in Canada. As an early adopter of the physical literacy concept, Canada has enjoyed many years of discussion and action across multiple sectors, including sport, recreation and education. Moreover, Canada boasts a large body of scholarship related to physical literacy, as well as strong policy to support both regional and national physical literacy initiatives. The conditions that have set the stage for Canada to become a leader in the physical literacy movement are outlined herein. More specifically, relevant information and discussion is organised by the main sectors impacting and enacting physical literacy-related practices (i.e. sport, recreation and education). Further discussion is provided on how these sectors collaborate to enhance the lives of Canadians. A section is dedicated to measurement and assessment of physical literacy, as several notable tools have been developed by Canadian scholars. Additionally, a brief overview of Canadian scholarship is offered, as is an account of how physical literacy is viewed for and from minority/minoritised populations’ perspectives. Finally, considering all this, a brief account of physical literacy’s potential and future(s) is offered.
