ABSTRACT

A central issue for the advancement of the field is that historical studies of the Internet have mostly been published in journals related to a variety of disciplines, and these journals only rarely publish articles with a clear historical focus. The situation has greatly improved with the various issues dedicated to Internet and web histories, as well as edited volumes, but these have tended to have only a limited number of contributions. Internet study is a varied field of study, but in the main, it emerged out of the social sciences and the humanities in the mid-1990s. A few characteristics make the new wave of Internet history especially interesting. A hallmark of the journal is its desire to publish and catalyse research and scholarly debate on the development, forms and histories of the Internet internationally, across the full global range of countries, regions, cultures and communities.
