ABSTRACT

Issues of identity continue to be of substantial importance to organizations and their members. Communication plays a powerful role in shaping and revealing individual and organizational identities as well as in influencing identification processes between members and various collectives. This chapter provides an overview of individual identities as relevant to contemporary organizations, organizational identities, and organizational identifications. For each of these interrelated topics, an effort is made to describe them generally, examine relevant theoretical/metatheoretical views and approaches, and highlight the constitutive role of communication. The chapter closes with some discussion about identity and identification especially as they pertain to organizing and communicating.
