ABSTRACT

Organizational life is lived, and communication is shaped through and around information and communication technologies (ICTs). That might be a bold statement, but for scholars who study ICTs, organizations, and organizing this realization grounds many of the current studies. This chapter includes a body of research that is highly interdisciplinary, and it showcases the contributions of organizational communication scholars. It begins by providing a historical perspective on ICTs and organizational life that includes theories and empirical work from the 1980s to current day. It also examines concepts related to the adoption and diffusion of ICTs into organizational practices at the individual and organization levels. The chapter ends by suggesting areas of research that offer promise for further scholarly explorations as well have having societal implications.
