ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on human behavior—specifically organizing—now that people have so many forms of new media to use when communicating. It explores a host of disciplines—organizational communication, public relations, computer science, civil engineering—therefore, they will use terms like crisis and new media in slightly different ways. The book also focuses on helping emergency and crisis responders cope with the ongoing stress of their jobs could benefit from this body of literature on resilience. It discusses transportation planning and how that can impact evacuations. The book examines how a university crisis communication team has used the after-action reports to learn and adapt to the constantly changing new media environment. It provides a state-of-the-art review of the community resilience literature. The book highlights the model of organizing in times of crisis.
