ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a behind-the-scenes look at how practitioners, first responders, and citizens organize, use new media, and make sense of their experiences. It also provides an interdisciplinary look at crises with the hope of inspiring future research that capitalizes on synergies between academic fields. Historically, disaster research has been an interdisciplinary field with roots in sociology, but other topics—for example, crisis communication—has been less interdisciplinary. In the area of crises, much of the resilience research is focused on people and communities who experience a tragedy. The book illustrates how teams coordinate, make sense of their experiences, and garner resources. It discusses the wide range of messages that people can share and seek during crises and hazardous situations. The book focuses on information seeking can help researchers develop a more complete understanding of the motivations behind how people seek crisis and emergency information.
