ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how interdependence is communicated and experienced by system members and how the interdependence influences the ability of multiteam systems (MTS) to respond during times of crisis. It provides information about the data. These data reveal three types of resources developed by interdependent teams and four processes used for developing these resources between teams. The chapter discusses how practitioners can use their knowledge of these resources and processes to help ensure coordination between the multiple teams of an emergency response system. MTSs consist of multiple teams working together to achieve a collective goal while negotiating various organizational and team boundaries. Leader-member exchange theory explores how the relationship between a team member and the leader of the organization/team influences that member and their performance. The establishment of shared communication technologies is a critical material resource for emergency response systems.
