ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the role of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), established in 2010 by the Central Government, in protecting and enhancing the biodiversity in India. Providing a brief overview of the provisions of the NGT Act, the chapter identifies and critically analyses the major orders on biodiversity passed by the NGT since its inception. The chapter describes innovative techniques adopted by the NGT to remove hindrances coming in its way to protect the natural environment, which earned it an envious reputation. After having examined the sharp reactions of powerful stakeholders for developmental projects, it concludes by stating that, till date, the NGT has been successful in surviving all odds against it and argues for its bright future for the protection of biodiversity, ecology and natural resources.
