ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the legal issues involved in commercially grown, Genetically Modified (GM) crops. It categorises the concerns about GM crops into three main categories viz. health, environment, and the manner in which GM seeds are brought to the market, and argues that the last category, namely the commercialisation of GM technology, is not so much a criticism of the technology, but more a concern as to who benefits from it. The chapter analyses the impact of GM crops upon plants developed by traditional breeding techniques, which has been recognised the world over as an accepted and integral part of agricultural practices. After having dealt with all the aspects of GMC in its favour as well as against the use of it, the chapter argues that in an increasingly hungry world, GM technology cannot be completely ruled out and calls for the judicious use of it.
