STAGE 1. COLLECTING THE RAW TERMS FROM THE LITERATURE AND OTHER SOURCES
Normally the initial set of terms for the thesaurus is obtained by scanning the literature in the field of interest and recording words and phrases of importance. At this stage, it is important to spread the net fairly widely to ensure that both popular and technical terms are included. It may also be appropriate to include terms used in the oral as well as the written communication in the area. Much of this will depend on the anticipated user group and their needs, and naturally, this must be a primary consideration throughout the process of thesaurus construction. It is generally considered good practice to prefer nouns and noun phrases, in the plural form, to other verbal forms.
