Swinburne's essay, ‘Wordsworth and Byron’, expressing his dissent from Arnold's estimate of these two poets, appeared in the Nineteenth Century for April and May 1884. It was reprinted in his Miscellanies, 1886, pp. 63–156. The following extract deals with Byron's defective artistry.
