ABSTRACT

In this part of the book, we consider some problems about the general connection between marxist theory and historiographical practice. Some of what follows is rather more abstract than the topics of the other two parts. But problems of a ‘philosophical’ kind often underpin the more ‘concrete’ questions of empirical research, methodology, and substantive historical judgement. What is the status of historical facts, or theories, or adequate socio-historical explanation? This type of question arises in any consideration of the relation of historiography to other intellectual and political problems.
