ABSTRACT

Early career researchers, and all researchers, are now faced with the obligation to incorporate the blurred concept of impact into their research. In this chapter, the author highlights and reflects on her experiences of conducting research in another country. Her project investigated the role of radio in the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in conflict-affected areas, with the West Bank as her case study. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, she analysed the NGO-related output of selected radio stations over the course of a whole year and interviewed dozens of radio and NGO employees. The author aims to assess how radios interacted with NGOs and make recommendations and suggest improvements. Using local radio stations whose reach is limited to the immediate vicinity and whose costs were considerably lower than the large, expensive stations which cover the whole region, was one of her recommendations.
