ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author considers the importance of recognising the differences between practice and academic contexts and how these can sometimes present unexpected barriers and opportunities for the early career researcher. The aim of the reflection is to explore the challenges and opportunities that arise from integrating her roles as both a practitioner and academic and examine how this can influence, guide and drive real-world impact. In response to a national funding call by The Burdett Nursing Trust, she submitted a proposal to explore how nursing-focused research can support the reduction of maternal and childhood obesity. On reflection, having a role model like this was a crucial factor in the success of the research delivery model. It is clear that research which engages practitioners and service users as active participants in its design and delivery has value on multiple levels.
