ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to present a study of the link between the officers' beliefs and their actual responses to cases of domestic violence by providing possible associations between three variables (religion, marriage, and domestic violence) that form the views of the personnel in intervening agencies for domestic violence. It focuses on the reality of law enforcement in Malaysia and about the real relationship between law and society. The chapter assesses the attitude, views, and understanding amongst personnel in agencies dealing with domestic violence cases on issues about marriage, the family, and domestic violence. It investigates the respondents' valuation of their religiosity and their understanding of their religions' teachings about marital relationships. The chapter seeks to offer a picture of sociocultural attitudes, which may be used for future studies as a basis to investigate the connection between the attitudes and actual responses of the personnel in cases of domestic violence.
