ABSTRACT

A student comments how she enjoys the music that I play before class in order to relax them and create a warmer classroom climate. She says that she listens to her iTunes library throughout the day, particularly while driving her car in order to momentarily have a forum for emotional release (catharsis). She says that some tracks evoke pleasant memories, while others stimulate recall of arguments. Sometimes, if a driver tries to cut her off and change lanes, she imagines telling the offending driver that they are an incompetent driver (suppressed road rage). Such examples, which occur across cultures on a daily basis, testify to the pervasiveness of a communication phenomenon we refer to as intrapersonal communication.
