ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that when cosmopolitan tendencies are observable and are highlighted at the onset of intercultural collaboration projects within the technical writing classroom, instructors will be able to create an environment where global citizenship becomes a possibility. It aims to find a different approach that acknowledges additional identities and recovers these identities' cosmopolitan potential and possible connection to global citizenship. The chapter outlines the connections between identity, cosmopolitanism, and global citizenship. This will be followed by a discussion of the results of multimodal analysis of the most commonly chosen identity categories represented on the class project blogs by 52 participants. Through educating students about cosmopolitan outlook and allowing them to acknowledge and act on their cosmopolitan identities, technical communication instructors can open a pathway to education for global citizenship. The chapter provides information on the most frequently represented identities: student identity, sports-related identity, and national identity.
