ABSTRACT

The career advocate serves an important role in helping job seekers determine how best to organize their resume. The career advocate must help the job seeker determine how best to express relevant experience on a resume. The value of a career advocate in the center is apparent in one employee's response regarding helping clients design more effective resumes. Resumes are an integral part of the job application process, and could be considered the single most important piece of technical documentation that job seekers ever create. Designing functional resumes, which emphasize relevant experiences and skills, for both new graduates and experienced professionals, may be more effective as relevant experience is prized. The chapter discusses ways for technical and professional communicators to become more involved with their local communities. It considers how civic engagement can help inform our own research and teaching practices. The chapter considers research on various organizational strategies for resume design and discusses importance of engaging with on-the-ground organizations.
